A Change of Events

Basketball Season is quickly coming…because High School Sports doesn’t lockout like the NBA. (NBA stab! O!) My team has been intensely preparing for the season…hopefully we can bring home some trophies (later updates to come on that). But I finally discovered something…

See, Girls are predominate in sports at this school. Right now, it’s volleyball for the girls. They only had two losses, great. Except that their coach (and school athletic director) rubs in our guys face….she kicks them out of the gym so that the girls can have the ENTIRE gym to practice volleyball. She talks about how the guys don’t work hard enough and the girls do that’s why they win…the boys quit, the girls don’t….there’s only one problem with all this….

She was right.

Boys basketball is subpar(tho improving), boys baseball never lives up to it’s expectations….my job is basketball coach….therefore I’ve been dumbfounded as to how to make the boys win….I’ve been teaching them the game, they improved..but the will to win wasnt there…I didn’t get it. What did the volleyball coach know that I didn’t? Then I starting watching the volleyball team….they took pride in the little things…the gym…was THEIR gym….they felt good about their teammates….they didn’t waste time in practice….these things work for them…

So when I had practice I told my team that in order to get the respect they want from the school we gotta have respect for OURSELVES. We gotta take over the gym from the girls.

How?

Take better care of the gym then they do, kill anyone who messes it up, appreciate every second we have together in practice….in other words..

Learn how to win OFF the court before we win ON the court.

Then the unthinkable happened…the girls lost in the first round of their conference tournament.

WHOA…Nevermind the first couple of paragraphs huh?

I now have a unforeseen momentum swing…the boys want to win…so they can beat the girls and gain control of the school sports throne….Now what we have here……could be something great!!!! I like it!

Tipoff in 5 weeks….

Some teams are just unfair….the ‘96 Bulls are just unfair….

“He was at every practice. He was one of those guys that you never could come into practice and say ‘M I’m a little tired today man. Take it easy on me.’ That would be like throwing blood in the water to him. He just wanted to kill you then.”

Conditioning

I’ve had 2 days of conditioning for the upcoming basketball and I can honestly say that my guys are fat and out of shape.

But isn’t everyone after summer break?

What I’m seeing in this group is an actual desire to get better. They don’t just talk about winning…they WORK to win. The crazy thing about this is that the oldest kids are in 10th Grade.

TENTH GRADE!!!

These are young kids who are still fighting the maturity war and yet they are stepping up as leaders and working hard in order to improve. Will this hard work turn into 11+ wins and a winning season?

Only time will tell.

I personally hope it turns into great success for these guys. They deserve it. The fire within them is burning and it’s my job to channel that motivation into success.

And channel it I will!

Jeez I’m this excited……and it’s only been 2 days of conditioning….they haven’t even picked up a ball yet….yikes..it might just be a great year…..
